Neuroscience on the Astral Plane - November 20th, 2025
Course Title:
Neuroscience on the Astral Plane: Neurobiology Versus the Subjective Experience in Psychedelic Therapy
Course Description:
What happens when a burgeoning field of scientific research tries to investigate a subject that seems to defy observation, quantification, and simplification? How, if at all, can science inform the subjective and the spiritual, the astral and the psychedelic? In this course we will examine the field of psychedelic neuroscience and ask where neuroscience fits among other, sometimes ancient, ways of knowing. Specifically, we will question the limits of neuroscience as a way of explaining the therapeutic potential of psychedelics like psilocybin, ketamine, and MDMA. We’ll dive into a hotly debated topic at the edge of psychedelic neuroscience, providing you with the neuroscientific background you need to understand the arguments. By the end of our discussion, you’ll know what the cutting edge research says about how healing is facilitated by psychedelics and you’ll develop your own sense of whether and how neuroscience can support you and your clients in this work.
When: 3 hour stand alone workshop, 10:00-1:00PM PST; Thursday November 20, 2025
Where: Zoom
Instructors: Racheli Wercberger PhD (Neurosciences) and Amy Braun PhD (Neurosciences), Ray Care PhD (Neurosciences). See www.neurotransmit.org for instructor bios.
Cost: $99 $149
Additional $25 for 3 CEs
Learning Objectives:
Question the limits of & contextualize neuroscience as a way of studying psychedelic-assisted therapy.
Distinguish how psychedelics work between different levels in the nervous system (ie molecular, cellular, circuits, cognitive).
Critique elements of a contemporary debate in the field of psychedelic neuroscience, specifically the role of the subjective experience in generating the therapeutic effects of psychedelics.
Target Audience
While all NeuroTransmit courses are created to be accessible to anyone curious about neuroscience, this course is designed for mental health professionals, including but not limited to PsyDs, PhDs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, as well as educators and students in these fields. This is an introductory course and no prior knowledge of psychedelic neuroscience is necessary.
